H. pylori is a Gram-negative bacterium that lives in the human stomach, where it can cause peptic ulcer disease. Around half of the world's population are infected, but most are asymptomatic. H. pylori's helical shape allows it to burrow more efficiently into the stomach's mucous lining. It is a microaerophile, meaning it thrives in very low concentrations of oxygen (around 2 µg/mL).
